Your Skincare Routine Needs a Fall Reset: What to Keep, Toss & Replace

Be honest: how many skincare products are sitting in your bathroom right now that you haven’t touched in months?
It’s okay, we all have a skincare graveyard. And fall is the perfect time to clear it out. As the seasons change, your skin’s needs may change too. The routine that worked for all summer might need adjusted as cooler weather sets in.
Before adding another product to your shelf, look at what you already have. Here’s how to give your skincare routine a fall reset.
1. Pull Everything Out
Take all of your skincare products out. Once everything is in front of you, you may be surprised by how many products you actually have, or how many are doing the exact same things.
Separate the products you use consistently from the ones you rarely reach for, then ask yourself why. Knowing why you stopped using something can help you make smarter choices when its time to replace it.
2. Check What’s Past Its Prime
Skincare products don’t last forever. That’s why it’s important to check expiration dates. You can also look for the Period After Opening, or PAO, symbol on the package. It typically looks like a small open jar with a number followed by an “M,” indicating approximately how many months the product is intended to be used for after opening.
Pay attention to the product itself too. Changes in color, smell, texture, or consistency can be signs that it’s time to toss the product.
And don’t forget about sunscreen. If you’ve been using the same bottle all summer, check its expiration date and make sure you have an SPF you can still use during the colder months (yes, you do still need SPF in the winter).
3. Stop Holding Onto Products That Aren’t Working for You
There’s a difference between giving a product enough time to see results and forcing yourself to use something that just doesn’t work for you. If a product consistently irritates your skin, doesn’t fit into your routine, or simply doesn’t contribute to your skincare goals, it may be time to move on.
Your skincare shelf doesn’t need to be filled with products you feel guilty not using. Instead, think about what you actually want your routine to accomplish. Identifying your priorities makes it easier to choose products intentionally.
4. Simplify Before You Add
Adding too many products at once can make it harder to determine what’s actually working for your skin. Before adding another product, make sure you have the basics covered.
Your individual routine will depend on your skin and its needs, which is why professional guidance is important. Don’t guess which products belong in your routine or which ingredients you need based on what you saw on social media. A professional can help you build a routine that makes sense for you.
5. Prepare Your Skin for Cooler Weather
Just like you swap your sandals for boots and your tank tops for sweaters, your skincare needs a seasonal adjustment too.
Cooler outdoor temperatures, lower humidity, and indoor heating can all contribute to dry skin. You may find yourself reaching for more hydration or notice that products you loved during the summer just don’t cut it anymore.
But this doesn’t mean you need an entirely new skincare routine. Instead, pay attention to how your skin feels and make the necessary changes. A professional can help you determine if your routine could benefit from changes as the weather gets colder.
6. Replace With Intention
Once you’ve figured out what to get rid of, resist the urge to immediately replace every bottle with the latest viral or trending products. This is your chance to be more intentional.
You don’t need to build your skincare routine based on trial and error. Instead, consider professional recommendations based on your skin, concerns, and goals. Everyone is different, and what works for someone else may not work for you.
A personalized approach can help take some of the guesswork (and clutter) out of your skincare routine.
